Stepping out of society's framework to take your own way

Many women in the coaching industry that I have spoken to about their own entrepreneurship beginnings have struggled to define their work structure. Things like

- How much should I be working?

We might feel free without the boss telling what and when to do certain things, but complete freedom leaves us unproductive, overworked, sleepless and burnt out eventually. Structured freedom is the way towards productive work if you want to achieve more in less time making the most income in that time frame.

- What is the best way to plan my day?

Without a clear plan, there will be a lot of multitasking, a lot of uncertainty, procrastination and tasks switching. Again, super unproductive. 

- With what to start?

 So often we have hundred ideas and hundred to-do tasks on our list. We want to do everything, because everything seems important, just to realize at the end of the day, that not much has been achieved.

All these are valid questions, concerns and occurring patterns that block potential.

It was easy to know what to do and when to do things when you had your 9-5, because you didn’t have to figure it all out on your own. There was someone who told you the rules. All you had to do was to follow them (even if you though that some them are nonsense, waste of time and completely stupid).

Our society is defined by a 9-5 framework, by perception that you have to work long and hard to be successful. And then, when you are working less and notice enjoying it, you kind of almost feel bad or ashamed so you hide it, doing meaningless stuff just to fill that time. Because that’s what you’re supposed to do!

Think real hard if you really need 8 hours to 

Do you need 8 hours to….

- become who you want to become?

- feel good about yourself, feel worthy?

- to show others how hard you work?

Or maybe it is the time you break those status que’s and start valuing your time for real!

Start focusing and doing ONLY what brings results.

Start prioritizing your most important tasks.

Start delegating tasks that don't require your genius.

Start decluttering your environment and mind to achieve results fast.

You don’t need 8 hours. Society needs you to work 8 hours so they can approve of you. Dare to challenge yourself and step outside your 9-5 mindset.

When distractions cut down on your productivity it’s easy to get overwhelmed and switch focus on unimportant tasks and start consuming more than creating. This is when SIMPLE moves away and COMPLICATED comes in giving you more of what you don’t need – frustration.

Here are 5 ways how you can make your life more simple today

  1. Declutter your home – get rid of anything you are not using. Don’t keep things just to have them with a thought that you will use it some day. That day might never come, so be wise with the stuff you fill your space. Because your space is important for your wellbeing. The less clutter you will have, the more at ease you will feel.   2. Organise your workspace – keep things where they belong so you don’t waste time trying to find them. The same applies to your computer and phone. To help you do that here is my free audio on How to Organize Anything where you can learn 3 steps to less chaos.
  3. Cut out time wasters – step back and analyse a bit what takes your attention away, what stops you from completing your day’s goal, what gives you that feeling at the end of the day when you have done a lot, but haven’t achieved anything meaningful.   4. Get rid of distractions – while there are a lot of things that distract us every single day, we are not without fault here. We are the ones letting ourselves get distracted thinking “it will just be a minute” turning out to another hour of wrong focus.   5. Make to-don’t list. Doing less of the things you shouldn’t be doing will highly increase your productivity leaving you with a more simple and stress free life. To help you make one, here is my take on what should be on that list.

Last, but not least, learn to say “no”. Prioritize yourself. You can’t do everything. Find out what’s really important to you and focus on those activities.

7 habits that wastes your time

Learn how to create more time to do things that matter

In days like these (“Where did the time go?”) your time was probably eaten by many distractions. To stop yourself from getting distracted and pulled different directions, it’s important that you attach value to your time. 

By using your time wisely you will have more of it for things that matter to you, like spending time with family and friends or pursuing other projects.

Set yourself up for success by eliminating these 7 time wasters and you may find you have more time than you realize.

    1. Notifications on your phone. Those who have been around here for some time know that I keep encouraging everyone to turn off all their notifications on the phone. That “beep” sound distracts you in fraction of a second, but unfortunately it takes much longer to get back in to your creative flow after this innocent “I will just quickly check-it might be urgent”.
    2. Open email all day long. For better productivity, you should set certain times when you allow yourself to check emails and ti should not be more than 2 times per day. Seriously, it is enough times (Im talking from experience). Like this you will not only save time, but will be able to focus better and process more emails in less time.
    3. Multitasking. You have probably heard about it, but let me remind you again. Trying to do more than one thing at a time actually diminishes your productivity. The human brain simply isn’t designed to multitask. Let me explain. Your brain slows down as it switches between tasks, with takes more time and makes you less efficient. Focusing on one thing at a time will make you more effective – better results with fewer errors.

4. Scrolling through Social Media. BIG waste of your time when you use it for personal use. You get sucked in to random posts only to realise that another 20 minutes have passed without creating results for your future. Mind your own business (literally) and create before you consume. When used effectively, social media can help boost your business and increase sales. But be careful, because constantly checking your news feed or looking to see how many people are following you is eating away at your focus and time.

5. Keeping your work space messy. Disorganized work spaces highly wastes your time because your focus is pulled in different directions, it’s hard to find things you need and, let’s be honest, it’s not a pretty look. Take all the clutter away leaving just the necessary for productive work. When everything has a place, you’ll be able to quickly find what you need and move on to the next thing.

6. Taking too many breaks. This is new to me, as I am that kind of person, that forgets to take a break instead of taking more than I should. However I have discovered that this is a habit for many making results hard to reach. The problem with this habit, you end up lingering and never really get your focus back. Schedule your break to keep yourself in check and focused.

7. Working when exhausted. I’ve been there. It’s not pretty or healthy. All it does is creates more exhaustion, more mistakes and less quality. You may end up facing burnout. Do yourself a favour and make sleep a priority. The time you spend resting will pay off when you’re awake and ready to take on the world.

Productivity coach instead of Business coach

How to choose which one is better for you and your business growth?

There are as many opinions as there are people in the world, but let me give you my insight, not only from personal experience, but from many women around me that have had an amazing results from being coached.

  • Increasing profit is what comes to your mind if you are ever considering to hire a coach. Because, you want your investment to double if not triple or skyrocket to places you though impossible.

When you are at the point in your career that feels like things are working fine, but could be working much better –  it’s time to hire a coach that will guide you into bigger success, because you are unsure of how to bring it to that next level.

No doubt that any coaching is designed to get better results. Coach is someone who helps you get past roadblocks and tackles weak links to fix them for greater profits. But most people think that business coaching is the only way to make you more successful. And while it’s proven to help grow businesses, it’s not always the best option. Let me explain.

I have put together some of the most typical business coaching traits:

    • Business coach helps your business, not you. As coach, service provider, mentor, your business is YOU and YOU are your business, so there is no separation really. Through your teachings you are giving part of yourself, right? It’s not like you have made a brand new pair of sunglasses and now are trying to sell. You are selling your experience, your knowledge, your skill set, your talent, your unique approach. As entrepreneur, it’s more important that you’re not feeling personally overwhelmed, unmotivated or unproductive, because all that highly affects your business, which is something a business coach might not be ablate to change.

    • Business coaching will not make your life better, it will make your business grow faster. This means, you will be working more hours, because now you will have to keep up with everything. It can be quite dangerous as it can lead to more anxiety, stress and eventually a burnout. Remember “You are your business”. 
    • Business coach doesn’t create systems that will give you long lasting results. Getting solid systems into place in your business and life is what creates the foundation for permanent success.

There are a lot of areas that Business coaching is very good for and a lot of areas that it does not address, like satisfaction with your job, more time freedom, better flexibility in your work, productive action, happiness in work and life, better connection with the work you do, …

If this is something you want to have more of as well as the increase in profit, productivity coaching might be the better option. 

Let me give you examples to know if you really need productivity coaching instead of business coaching:

1. You have too much on your plate – it’s hard to get everything done.

Wouldn’t you agree that money can be earned, but time – it can never come back, be earned or renewed. It’s so much more important to know how to spend your time than it is your money because you can never get it back once it’s gone. Women like Marie Forleo, Jennifer Lopez and Oprah all have the same 24h in a day, just like you and me. So how come they’ve got this outrageous amount of success? The secret is in the art of productivity. All they have done is optimized themselves to manage their time better so they can get more done in shorter amount of time.

2. You want to do more, but don’t have enough time – it’s hard to focus.

Distractions are the biggest weak link in your productive work. The beep on your phone can take you from “in the zone” to complete “lack of inspiration” in a fraction of a second. Interruptions are messing up your productive work because it takes a huge amount of time to get back on your tasks after this short “I will just check my phone, in case it’s urgent” action.  The good news? It’s not your fault. It’s about the systems you do (or don’t) have in place and how they free up your time.

3. You want to flow with ease in your life and business at the same time.

Here I want to highly suggest to not take examples of successful business owners who have aged by days – they are working over 60h per week, stressed, sleepless and have not time for anything else in their lives. That’s not a success! Success is not when your business is booming, success is when you’re thriving in all areas of your life. Don’t sacrifice your personal life to only scale in your business. Life is about balance, so lets create one for you!

Fundamentals of successful coaching business that impacts thousands

There are many powerful women out there who have shown great strength and ability to lead by example and follow their path no matter the obstacles. Many times we create these road block for ourselves and wonder why are we stuck. It is not always easy to notice that and push past it. BUT once you do – sky is the limit.

Meet Vicki, a mum of 3, a former Virtual Assistant who rides motorbike for fun. But her main passion is supporting women in business – ”When I closed my VA Business I knew it was time for change. I was suffering, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Anxiety, Burn Out, Depression, PTSD from domestic abuse and so much… My journey  to where I am now began. I transformed my life and career and now get the pleasure of showing women how they can do that too!” EXCITING STUFF, isn’t it?

Fundamentals of successful coaching business that impacts thousands with Vicki Chisholm.

Vicki is a Transformational Life and Biz Coach who empowers women from the inside out to gain clarity and follow their hearts through coaching and holistic therapies. 

Key ingredients to success.

As a successful coach Vicki is clear on her key ingredients for having a productive work where the attention goes only in business growth direction. That is not possible with clarity around what it is that you truly want, because only then you are able to take steps to move. “If you don’t have clarity the fear and stuckness will hold you back and cause procrastination – We all know that feeling!” – Vicki.

But that’s not all. “No distraction policy” with a time limit is a non negotiable to reach goals for Vicki. And I could not agree more! Distractions take out attention away not letting us focus on the tasks that can potentially bring in thousands. Which leads to third ingredient on Vicki’s success path – Prioritise your tasks, what are your MAIN 3 tasks for the whole day – these tasks will move you forward – Example: Cleaning the house or putting on an extra load of washing is not going to move your business forward. Do it later, not in your business time. Doing an email campaign, writing a blog or calling that potential client etc… are the business growth tasks you really want to prioritise.”

The art of prioritizing

Vicki loves a productive day, but it doesn’t just happen by itself. Prioritizing comes in handy to really nail that day on your productivity scale. It’s one of those days when all the BIG tasks I’ve set myself are complete. I can then close down the day and relax. A productive day for me consists of: Marketing, Clients, regular breaks and Business Building tasks.” – Vicki. To make that a reality for yourself, take Vicki’s example and regularly review where you’re at and what needs to be done next: “For example: If my blog didn’t get done yesterday that is a priority. If a client has been quiet, I know I need to check in with them. I set myself checklist each month / week and plan my week ahead every Sunday. So the main priority tasks are existing clients, nurturing new leads and  marketing, then I look at business development. If my automation has a hiccup this would then become a priority and so forth.”

Never the less is it important to know your productivity flow and engage in important tasks when you are at your optimal attentive level. For moms in business it’s usually the quite moment of the day when everyone is still sleeping or when everyone is already in bed. I like to be creative in the evenings, I find it really therapeutic,  and I like to tackle ‘MUST DO’ tasks first thing in the morning.” – Vicki.

And let me just mention here that, delegating some of your tasks is a part or prioritising process and highly increases your time freedom and space to work on your genius. Choose tasks that you particularly don’t enjoy, are not good at, takes too much of your precious time and you will be on your way to a more productive day.

Tackling distractions

Distractions are the biggest time killer and worst focus enemy. To have a really productive day, we must tackle them with proven methods. While my approach might not work for everyone, it is important to experiment and notice what makes you most focused. Vicki has noticed a pattern in her life: “If I don’t prioritize self care then everything distracts as my flow becomes stagnant and I lose motivation.” It is a great reminder to all of us that we must never forget about ourselves. Because if our “cup is empty”, we are not able to share which is taking away from others to benefit.

As important as knowing your biggest distraction is understanding your motivation to make sure you are aligned with your goals and are taking action steps towards them. It might not always be clear, sometimes we procrastinate and delay by sabotaging our success. When this happens, the best is to look for someone to guide you through it: “Before I started working with a coach I wasn’t taking as much action as I am now. My coach has helped me set deadlines and getting me out of my comfort zone with a quick turn around. I love a challenge – and having someone to hold me accountable is ultimately the driving force behind me. When I didn’t have support, I just took my time, procrastinated and there was not as much prioritization.”

Energy boost

We all lack inspiration at times, our energy levels decrease and mood lowers. If you have not find your way to boost it all back up, take Vicki’s example: “Dancing. I find my power songs and hit the playlist and I turn up the volume and I DANCE! I also then reach out to my clients, and ask them what they are struggling with and if I can help them. This then gives me the nudge I need and a reminder as to why I do what I do. – To help and serve the women of the world. If it’s a little more than lacking inspiration then I access my own resources and do the inner work that is required to help me find my flow again.”

Tackle your distractions to gain back your focus

While it is quite handy to use different platforms to connect with people form all over, this is also how we get distracted way too often.

We live in a century of connection. It is harder than ever to keep focus on assignment and stay committed to the task without letting outside world distract us. Not even mentioning that out inner world takes a great deal in all this and keeps us stuck.

There has been quite a few researches done showing that people get distracted as often as every 11 minutes, but the worst part is that it would take about 25 minutes to actually settle down again to your task. And of course the complicated the project, the longer it takes for your brain to regain focus.  You can learn more about this research here. 

But if you’re reading this, you value your time and want to take control of your focus. So let's not waist anyones time and tackle distractions to stay focused and get things done.

1. Eliminate Your Options.

Try to surround yourself with as little possible distraction as possible. Before you start working on your next task, identify those distraction to eliminate them. For example, if you have your phone or bag of peanuts on your working desk, it is very likely you will get yourself distracted by one of them. To avoid that, put your phone somewhere else and hide peanuts so they are not in hands reach.

Outside distraction hugely impact out work, but we tend to distract ourselves more than we should. Keep focusing on your tasks and eliminate your options for distractions – its all in your hands.

2. Set Boundaries for Yourself.

If laptop is your main working gadget, you obviously can’t eliminate it from your distractions list. However to keep yourself in focus, set boundaries to spend certain amount of time on where you shouldn’t be spending time at all.

If you are taking a break from your work for 10 minutes and start to watch Youtube videos about funny cats, it can drag much longer than just 10 minutes (trust me, I know!). So instead of continuously procrastinating, set boundaries. For example, watch only 2 videos or if you allowing yourself to do it for 5 minutes, make sure to set a timer on it, to keep yourself accountable and productive.

3. Control your Environment.

We might not be able to control outer distractions, like a urgent phone call or sirens outside out window, but what we can do is to make out environment as distraction free as possible. We get triggered by  our 5 senses constantly.

        • Sound – chit chat, pets, white noise, music
        • Touch – your chair, your clothes, table        
        • Sight – screen, wallpaper, environment, view
        • Smell – coffee, flowers, perfume, nature
        • Taste – aftertaste, what you’re eating/chewing

Your work environment should be triggered by as less of those triggers as possible, so choose wisely. To do that, you must identify what distracts you most in terms of the five senses. For some, coffee shops are their places to focus because they are comfortable with the white noise and the smell of coffee keeps them energized; but for others,  people moving around can be quite distracting. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of places to find the most suited environment to help you get things done!

Win back your focus

Be sure to take the advices in to serious account if your unproductive days are starting to win over your productive ones. You need to do an inventory to figure out where your distractions originate, and put a stop to them. No matter what your distractions are, you are in control of your time, what you do with it and where you spend it. Be sure to keep that control in your hands and never give it away to anyone else.

Now you have a solid system to identify and tackle distractions that you weren’t aware of.

Isn’t it why we all started our online entrepreneurship – to have time freedom, financial independence and all the family time in the world? However couple years in, that dream of yours might have faded and gotten blurrier. If that is the case, lets bring it back right now and remember all your WHY’S.

Not that you are back on track with your vision, lets make it a reality with Rachael’s advices, tips and tricks to not only scale you business, but also profit personally.

What is the key to productive work?

“Break down each task into tiny pieces, create a time estimate, and then schedule the pieces into your day. Having a plan before you start work is essential.” – Rachael

I have always loved planning, and because of that I have been put down and minimized. Never the less, I started to think that because of organizing and planning I was boring, couldn’t “go with the flow”, allow what ever happens happen, and so on…. But because of my inner voice that did not let me give up on that and follow the crowd, I have managed to not only plan my way to success, but help so many women do the same! Planning doesn’t get in away of your creativeness, it serves to bring out your genius when is the right time. Honestly, planning is freeing and stops overwhelm come in to your life –  and that is a true gold.

If you need more convincing hear Racheal out: “Productive workday is one in which every hour has a purpose. The purpose may be free time, kid time, or work time, but you have an intention with each hour. Overwhelm develops when we feel like we should be doing something else or when we spend too much time thinking about when we are going to do certain tasks. This is true for creating a sales funnel or laundry! Have a schedule is truly freeing.”

But how to know what to do first, what projects need more attention than others, how to prioritise them? Follow Rachaels example:

    1. Look at due dates, how much time they are estimated to take, and the ease of completion.

  2. Look at the available time slots in you schedule and start scheduling.

“If it is a project that does not need my full focus, I might schedule it while my kids are working on school work next to me, but if it needs focus time I make sure that I schedule it at a time when they are either asleep, not at home, or doing something where they do not need me. I always make sure to schedule in time to refresh myself and to focus on my kids. I limit each day to no more than 3 projects.” – Rachael.

What time of the day you are you most productive?

It is so important to prioritize your tasks not only considering your family schedule, but also your productivity flow. That way you can save plenty of time, not drag your tasks for far too long, have way less overwhelm and way more free time.

Rachael says she is most productive first thing in the morning and tries to do the work that requires focus at that time. “I am worthless after 8 PM!” – Rachael.

Do you know when you are most productive? Are you using it to your advantage?  Knowing this will save you hours and help finish big projects faster and with much better quality.

How to keep yourself focused?

“I stay focused by scheduling “focus time”. During this time, I turn off notifications and avoid looking at email and messages. I have projects that require my concentration scheduled at this time and I know this is the only way they will get done.” – Rachael.

Those who have been following me for some time might know that I do not have any notifications that beep or show up on my screen, simply because they are DISTRACTING! If you really need and want to do your best work without interruptions during certain time, eliminate your options to get distracted. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that you shouldn’t allow yourself any social media time, just make sure you don’t do it to distract yourself or procrastinate.

To make it easier for you, make sure to plan your breaks as well. It is important to refresh, stretch, clear your mind so you can get back to work with full force. Rachael also schedules brakes, which length depends on what she is doing for the day – it might be the time when she brings kids to practice or even 15 minutes to scroll through Facebook.

You don't have to do everything!

Delegating some of your tasks is a great way to reduce working on things that you don’t necessary like or aren’t good at, creating more time to work on what no-one else can do for you – your genius.  Rachael: “I have a VA that helps me with my podcast after I record it. There are just parts of business that I do not enjoy so I like to hand those over to someone else. I will not do a very good job if it is not fun and it gives me more time for the tasks that only I can do like coaching.”

Lack motivation?

“To boost energy when I am lacking motivation, I exercise, listen to music, and chat with my kids. I also do a ton of self-coaching to get to the bottom if why I am lacking in motivation. Once I find out why, I can get back at it.” – Rachael.

“Take Productive Action instead of Massive Action. Massive Action is driving 100 miles an hour using the wrong map. Productive Action is planning your trip before you take the journey!” - Rachael Jencks

My biggest take away from this experience is to to be reminded about taking productive action instead of massive one. It is SO important if we truly want to reach our goals faster but without overwhelm.

That reality consist of things we do and things we don’t do. How to choose what is write? How to know what actions to take and what to leave behind?

In todays world with information overload, thousand of suggestions to do more and more things, I think it is time to make an inventory and really start doing LESS.

You might know that to-do list is an amazing way to get things out of your head and on to a paper to clear your mind, so you have more space to work on your genius rather then occupy yourself trying to not forget your next step.

And how good does that feel, when you cross out or check off a task?? (It’s the best!)

However so many of us still struggle to reach deadlines and find hard to focus, have thousand thoughts running through head and our to-do lists seems never ending…

Is it because even though we do our to do list, we also do things we know we shouldn’t do!

What goes in to this list?

1. Things you like doing but you don’t need to do.

2. Things you keep doing although they are not that important.

3. Things that you think you need to do but that are not really necessary.

Creating a list of the things that distract you during the day will make you more aware and better prepare you for avoiding distractions.

When you don’t think about what you shouldn’t do then it’s much easier to get distracted and waste time doing things you shouldn’t do while things on your to-do list go undone.

So let me help you with basic things you should include on your list to super-boost your productivity so you are able to focus on what you actually should be doing:

1. Don’t work in a distracting place.

If you ave an office, it should be the most inviting, motivation and inspiring place where you are in the zone to create. (more not that in my other blog about home office). If there is anything that takes your attention away, you should get rid of that. If you get easily distracted, try avoiding working n coffee houses, on your couch next to tv or other places where you KNOW you will not be productive. It is not a atome science, your working space defines your productivity, so make the most of it and do yourself  favour by choosing wisely where you will work on your genius.

2. Don’t spend time on social networks.

While for most of us networking is part of business, it is very easily to get distracted and start stalking people. If it is the case for you, make sure you designate time that you spend on socialising for work and for pleasure. For really productive day you should not spend more than 15 minutes on social media for pleasure. If you need to work on Facebook, then focus on your work and once finished, close it to move on to the next task.

3. Don’t leave your email open all day.

It is proven that notifications are our biggest distractions. Weather they are coming from your email or any app you may have on your laptop or phone, they cause disruption in your creative flow. I have always suggested to turn off all notifications, but when it comes to emails it is super important. Without designated time specifically to work on emails, we might as well spend all day checkin our inbox, answering as soon as new email comes in while trying to complete other tasks. Designate time in a day when you are dealing with your emails, instead of dragging it out through out the day. There are many different tools that can help you to work on your email with better effectiveness, like Boomerang. This way you will be able to focus and deal with more emails in shorter amount of time and create extra time for what ever you want! How cool is that?

4. Don’t help everyone who asks.

Yes, might sound harsh, but hear me out. Your inbox might be filling with offers, request, suggestions and invitations. Your job is to filter what is serving your and what doesn’t. I am very well aware of a want to help everyone. However it is physically impossible! It is the good old “learn to say NO” truth that liberates. A good way to filter is to make a list on what interest you, what you would like to participate in, what serves your business and therefore your legacy on helping others. If the request you receive is not in your wheelhouse, don’t think about it too much, politely decline and move on.

5. Don’t spend too much time on your to do list.

It is understandable that you want to be careful on what goes on it, but this should be a fairly quick task without taking hours of your time. 15 minutes daily should be more than enough to be clear on your tasks for the day.

Do you need an office

People perform best when they have flexibility but not total freedom and lack of structure. Work from home with designated working place is perfect to not only increase productivity, but also have ability to create your schedule according to yours and your families needs.

Although as service based business owners we have a luxury of working from pretty much anywhere in the world, to be really productive, the space where you do your most valuable work is important. 

“Self isolation has proven that we need to be in an office type of space for at least couple of days a week to truly embrace work-life balance with ability to set boundaries for productive work.” - Agnese Rudzate

Honestly, as a coach I am not surprised about changes that self isolation has put us in. There is a lot to adapt to, a lot to implement and change. But there is always a way to improve and with little tweaks we will come out of it smarter, stronger and able to adapt to pretty much anything 🙂

I want you to thrive during this time, so I have made couple of suggestions how to improve your office space based on your feelings so you can work efficiently in home environment:

    1. You need to feel physically comfortable. The place where you work can look  amazing, inspiring and motivating, but if the chair you are sitting on is not living up to your comfort level, it is no good. It might look amazing in the interior, but it also needs to feel amazing. The same goes for lighting, desk hight, file storage or anything that you may have. For example if you need to print a few papers, but the printer is in another room, every time you are printing something, you have to waste your time commuting. Although exercising is good and needed, make sure it does not clash with your productivity. 
    2. You need to feel emotionally ready. Once you come in to your work space, it should send your brain a signal that party is over and you need to focus on tasks that grow your business. How to make that happen? Get rid of distractions. Your family photo can be a great inspiration or huge distraction, so choose wisely. Go to your working space and evaluate what is serving you and what is not. 
    3. You need to feel however you want to feel to get work done. Each of us might go after different feelings. If you are writing a blog about your last nights dream, a calm and relaxing music might help you get in the right mood. If you are trying to figure out your monthly expenses and deal with bills, maybe background music is not the best choice. My point here is to create the environment that HELPS you get the work done instead of taking your attention away.

We all have different needs and wants when it comes to our work space. While a lounge  might work for some and at different times, others will need specifically designated place with closed doors and everything in hands reach. What ever flows your boat to a productive work will serve you greatly.

Work efficiently,

even when everyone's at home..

A lot of things have changed for so many of us and I have to say that this worldwide “Situation” will stay in our memories for some time.

While many of you have been working form home before, things still might be quite different for one reason – all your family is at home with you!

That might be something new – now you have to adapt and be able to work while everyone’s at home.. Meaning, you have to make sure they are allowing you to work, you have to find time for them and for yourself as well.

So let me give you couple of suggestions on how to work more efficiently from home..

We each are in slightly different situation in our lives, in our homes, in our businesses. That being said, since we all have to be at home now, the following tips might highly increase your work productivity. Be aware that not all of them will be applicable to you, so take what resonates and leave the rest.

1. Work from home is still a work, so treat it like one. It is so easy to get lazy, sleep in, get to your laptop in pjs. Lets be honest here – that will not grow your business, increase produtivity and inspire your family. So get up at the same time, do your morning routine, get dressed and treat your work from home like a real work.

2. Set a time for your work. Start and FINISH time. That will prepare you mentally to work more effectively.  This will also give your family a structure to respect, so you can fully concentrate on what needs to be done and use the time solely on your work. Establish your office hours and communicate your expectations with anyone who are at home with you.. That will help you keep the focus on work. And for your family members that will signal that seriousness of what you do.

3. The space you work in is supper important. I speak more about that in my video here. But in short, your working place either motivates you or it doesn’t. So to work more productively during the time that you have set for yourself, the space you work in needs to be inviting, motivating, inspiring or making you feel how you want to feel when you are in the process of creation. It involves a lot of basic things like lighting, plants, vision board, etc. Do what ever makes you inspired.

Side note: Having an office space might work for some, but there are times when you just feel stuck. What to do? If it is possible, change your work place. Sit on a couch or work on a balcony to mix things up and to get inspired and uplift your mood. As long as these changes doesn’t distract you, your are good to go.

4. Take a break and move around at least every hour. Sitting too long by your computer will lower your focus, motivation and inspiration. So try to sand up and move around, stretch, make a tea, go and soak up some sun on the balcony, just move. But if you really want to shake off the routine – do quick running in place, frog jumps or dance. That will for sure shake of all distractions. 

5. While background music doesn’t work for me, it might be a great motivator for you. I have spoken with many women who are using inspiring music to help them focus and get in to the mood. Something to try, if you have not already..

6. As difficult as it might be to concentrate when working form home, begin your working day with most important tasks. Like that you will jump start your day efficiently and the rest will follow in alignment with your energy. Schedule your calls, meetings in the afternoon, after your have finished your most important tasks. If work from home is new to you, try to do video calls instead of phone calls — that way you will get can more connection and some social interaction.

7. Don’t let the online space be the first thing you do in the morning – that will highly distract you from your most important tasks. Create first, then consume. You’re phone should be put on silent during your work. And if you think that your phone doesn’t distract you, think again and be honest with yourself and write down every time you are trying to work and end up scrolling your IG? A great way how to avoid this distraction is to schedule times for when you check emails and social media.
